Hand tools

Sledge hammers, claw hammers, chisels, pick axes and hoes, forged and hardened.

We design induction heating and hardening systems for sledge hammers, claw hammers, chisels, pick axes and hoes. We develop the treated zone around the working surfaces of each tool.

A hand tool has an awkward requirement. The working face must be hard enough to hold an edge or resist deformation under repeated impact, while the body must stay tough enough that it never shatters. A hammer head that is uniformly hard is genuinely dangerous. Selective hardening is not a cost optimisation here; it is the safety requirement.

We have built a double station sledge hammer head hardening machine specifically for this work: a PLC controlled vertical scanner with two stations and an integrated DM water and quenching water cooling and circulation system, so one station runs while the operator loads the other.

Worth knowing

  • Both ends of the process are usually induction: bar end heating to forge the head, then induction hardening of the working face, then tempering.
  • Cycle time in this sector is set by the operator, not the machine. That is why the double station configuration exists.
